Manage orders through packing
When fulfillment is enabled for packing, you can use the Fulfillment page to move your sales orders through these common steps:
- Mark sales orders as ready to be packed
- Assign packers
- Enter packed quantities
- Mark orders as packed
- Print pack lists
- Mark orders as ready for the next fulfillment process
Use the steps that are applicable for your business processes and in the order that makes sense to you. The person who performs these steps, such as the warehouse manager or packers, also depends on the size and roles in your organization.

If you experience browser lag time, consider changing your personal preferences to display 50 rows per page or less:
In a multi-entity company, you can only access the fulfillment pages from the top level. |
1. Mark sales orders as ready to be packed
If you manage orders through the picking process, the orders might already have been marked as ready to be packed. Otherwise, you can mark orders as ready to be packed from the All orders tab.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
The Fulfillment page appears with the All orders tab open. For a description of the fields on the page, see field descriptions.
- Filter the sales orders on the tab, if needed. For example, if you are the warehouse manager, you might want to see only the orders for your warehouse that are in Picked status.
- Select the sales orders that are ready to be packed and move them into a ready-to-pack state:
- Individual sales order. At the end of the row, select Actions > Ready to pack.
- Multiple sales orders. Select the checkbox at the beginning of the row for each order. Then select Ready to pack at the top of the grid. (You can also use the checkbox at the top of the column to mass select and deselect the sales orders.)
The status of the sales orders changes to Ready to pack. All the sales orders continue to appear on the All orders tab. However, the sales orders you marked as being ready to pack also appear on the Pack tab for easier access and management.
Quantities are reserved whenever you successfully change the status from Open to any other status and have yet to enter picked or packed quantities. The status can only be changed from Open if:
-
There's at least some quantity of the requested items available, that's not already allocated to another order.
-
If inventory is allowed to go negative for non-tracked items.
2. Assign packers
You can assign the same packer to one or more orders. You can also assign different packers to different line items within an order.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
- Select the Pack tab on the Fulfillment page. For a description of the fields on the page, see field descriptions.
- Select the checkbox at the beginning of row for each sales order that you want to assign to a specific warehouse worker for packing. Then select Assign to at the top of the grid.
The Assign To dialog opens. The dialog indicates whether any of your selections already have assignees.
- From the Assign to dropdown list, select the employee who will pack the selected sales orders.
- Optional. Select Override existing assignments to replace any existing assignees with the currently selected assignee.
- Select Assign.
The Assigned to field on the selected orders is updated.
- In the No. of lines field for an order, select the number. The Order Details dialog opens, where you can see the details for the line items.
- To change an assignee for an item, select the Assigned to field for the item and select an assignee from the dropdown list. If you are assigning the same picker to many line items, you can select the checkbox at the beginning of the row; then select Assign to at the top of the grid.
- When you are through making assignments, select Save.
The Assign to column for the order is updated to 'Mixed', which indicates that more than one employee is assigned to the order.
3. Enter packed quantities
After an order has been packed, you want to enter the packed quantities. If picked quantities have not been entered, for example because the order did not go through the picking process, entering the packed quantities causes the reserved quantity to be decreased and the allocated quantity to be increased. This ensures that the quantities are assigned to the order.
If you only have some of the requested items available, and you want to proceed with a split shipment, enter the number packed. An additional grouping line is created on the All orders tab. You'll complete the shipment when new inventory arrives, using the new grouping line.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
- Select the Pack tab.
- Find the sales order for which you want to enter the packed quantities.
- In the No. of lines field for the order, select the number.
The Order Details dialog opens.
- For each item in the order that was packed, enter the quantity that was packed in Qty packed. If the item is tracked, select the hyperlink in the Serial, lot, bin column to open the details area. Use the SERIAL, LOT, BIN table to enter the packed quantity. Any tracking information that was entered on the sales order or for picked quantities persists. The tracking information can be edited if it is no longer accurate.
Learn more about entering packed quantities for tracked items.
- Optional. Open the details area for each item to enter packing notes to pass along and details, such as information about the containers used for packing the items. For example, when an item is packed, the quantity might be packed in 3 standard-sized boxes.Alternatively, you can open the details area for the order instead of for each line item and enter the packing container information. When entered at the order grouping level, the packing container information is cascaded down to each line item in the order.
-
Select Save.
4. Mark orders as packed
Consider skipping this step if you’re ready to move your packed orders directly into the next fulfillment process in your workflow, such as shipping. Otherwise, you can mark them as packed until you’re ready to move them forward.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
- Select the Pack tab.
- Filter the sales orders on the tab, if needed.
- To mark an individual sales order as packed, at the end of the row, select Actions > Packed.
- To mark multiple sales orders as packed, select the checkbox at the beginning of the row for each order that has been packed, then select Packed at the top of the grid.
The status of the sales orders changes to Packed. The sales orders continue to appear on both the All orders tab and the Pack tab.
5. Print pack lists
You can print one pack list per order (order grouping) to be put in the box. Printing separate pack lists per package is not currently supported. For example, if you have 7 orders, you can print a pack list for each order; you cannot create a separate pack list for a package in an order.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
- Select the Pack tab.
- Select the checkbox at the beginning of row for each sales order that you want to print a pack list. Then select Print pack list at the top of the grid.
The Print Pack List dialog opens.
- Select what you want included on the pack list:
- Order ID
- Ship by date
- Serial, lot, bin
- Select how you want the orders grouped:
- Order
- Assigned to
- Customer
- Shipped to
- Select Add or edit to select how you want the lines within an order sorted. Drag and drop the sort items to change the sorting order.
- Select Print.
Give the pack lists to the warehouse workers who are to put the pack lists in the boxes for the orders.
6. Mark orders as ready for the next fulfillment process
Depending on the fulfillment processes you use, mark your packed orders as ready to be shipped or invoiced. This moves the order off the Pack tab and onto the Ship or Invoice tab for easier access and management.
-
Go to Order Entry or Inventory Control > All > Fulfillment.
- Select the Pack tab.
- Filter the sales orders on the tab, if needed.
- If you use the Ship process, move orders into ready-to-ship status:
- Individual sales order. At the end of the row, select Actions > Ready to ship.
- Multiple sales orders. Select the checkbox at the beginning of the row for each order. Then select the ellipsis button(...) at the top of the grid and select Ready to ship.
- If you do not use the Ship process but use the Invoice process, move orders into ready-to-invoice status:
- Individual sales order. At the end of the row, select Actions > Ready to invoice.
- Multiple sales orders. Select the checkbox at the beginning of the row for each order. Then select the ellipsis button(...) at the top of the grid and select Ready to invoice.
The status of the sales orders changes to Ready to ship or Ready to invoice. The orders no longer appear on the Pack tab, but appear on the tab associated with the status and the All orders tab.
