Troubleshooting
Here are some common problems that you can run into when calculating sales tax with AvaTax along with some possible solutions.
Click one of the following problems to see a solution for it.
Solution: The transaction form (Transaction Definition template) must include a tax subtotal line. Add the subtotal field for sales tax to your form template. Learn more about adding a tax subtotal in Order Entry.
Solution: This could be a few things. First, if the address information on the order is not valid, then often the tax will show as zero. You can test this by saving the transaction, and if the problem is with the address, you get an error message informing you of the addresses issue. If the customer is not checked off as taxable in their record, then no tax will be calculated. If you have never been able to get a tax amount, then there's likely a setup issue; if it only happens on a certain transaction, then it is possible that there is no tax for that particular order. Finally, you might have no nexus in the tax jurisdiction. Check your nexus profile.
Solution: Most likely the issue is simply the date range selected for the report. Most of the time, tax is paid to your local tax authority on a quarterly basis. Make sure that the date range on the report matches the quarter for which you are paying; if it is set to something like “Year To Date,” then the total will look very high. If the date range is set to “This month,” then the total will probably look very low.
Solution: Most likely you have opted to display detailed tax lines. You can deselect the option to show detailed tax lines by updating your Avalara Tax subscription in Sage Intacct.
Solution: Most likely you have mapped your entity to a different Avalara company, so that when you create the sales transactions at the entity level, it is pointing to a different Avalara company. Or you have created the transaction at the top level for an entity, and your top level configuration is using a different Avalara company.
