Projects, project groups, and the Project dimension
The Project dimension allows you to simplify the process of capturing data for projects that you can then use to filter with and build into reports.
- Projects application provides the ability to efficiently track and manage the financials for your company. For more information, see Projects applications and dimension.
- Project dimension is a classification system for organizing, sorting, and reporting on information in meaningful ways. For more information, see Projects applications and dimension.
- Dimension group is a particular set of members in a dimension, or a set of members that meet certain criteria. For example, you can create projects groups for projects located in a particular geographic location or projects with a specific customer base ,or of a certain nature, such as manufacturing or retail projects.

If you're not familiar with dimensions, the following video introduces dimensions and how they can help you gain insight into your project financials:
Dimensions used with Projects
You can enable the following dimensions for use with the Projects application:
- Project: Use for Basic project tracking, or with a subscription to Projects. Track project data for reporting purposes.
- Task: Dependent on the Project dimension and a subscription to Projects. Captures data for projects as you enter transactions.
- Cost Type: Dependent on a Construction subscription. Adds a cost type field to transaction pages in other applications so you can track the project + task + cost type as part of your data-entry process.
Project groups in reports and dashboards
Project groups are a type of dimension group. A dimension group is a particular set of members in a dimension. You can manually select the group members or set up filters to select them automatically.
Defining a project group gives you additional control over what appears in reports and dashboards. In general, any project group that you create appears as additional filter choices. Project groups allow you to do the following:
- Manually select a set of members, such as specific customers, vendors, or locations.
- Filter to include members that meet certain criteria, such as items of the same type or customers of the same type.
- Control the order in which the members appear in report columns and rows.
- Take advantage of dimension counts to post to statistical journal entries automatically.
