Use column prompts
The column prompt is the most common type of prompt. This type of prompt applies a value to a selected column for a chosen field. The column prompt acts as a filter when the report is run, returning only the matching results.
This topic covers how to add column runtime prompts to an Interactive Report Writer (ICRW) report. For information on other types of runtime prompts you can add to reports, see Include runtime prompts in a report.

Add column prompts
The column prompt is the most common type of prompt. This type of prompt applies a value to a selected column for a chosen field. The column prompt acts as a filter when the report is run, returning only the matching results.
When you create the prompt, you select the columns and operators, then specify how the prompt appears and how the values are selected.
- Select an ICRW report to Edit.
- Go to the Prompts tab, select the New icon
, and select Column Prompts from the dropdown list. - Select the column to which you want to add a prompt.
If the appropriate column is not available from the list, select More Columns in the dropdown list. Then, choose the appropriate column in the Select Column dialog. - In the New Prompt dialog, enter the necessary information for the prompt. The options differ based on the column type that you selected.
- Select OK.
- Optionally, to add a row or column to the prompts page, select New Row or New Column in the Definition page toolbar.
- Optionally, repeat the previous steps to create additional prompts.
- To see how the prompt appears at runtime, select the Preview icon
.
Add dimension or dimension group prompts
You can prompt users to select dimensions or dimension groups when they run an ICRW report. These options allow reporting results to be quickly refined to values within a dimension group. For example, a dimension group might contain all customers with a particular attribute.
- Select an ICRW report to Edit.
- Add a dimension ID object from the Dimension subfolder as a column to the report.
For example, from the Dimension folder, select Location, then the ID [Department] object. - Go to the Prompts tab, select the New icon
, and add a Column Prompt for the new dimension ID column. - Set the following:
- Operator: is equal to / is in.
- User can select from: Choice List.
- Select OK.
When you preview the report in edit mode, you’ll only be able to select from single dimension members, not dimension group members.
When you run the report, users can select from a list of dimensions, or dimension group members associated with the dimension name column you added.
